چکیده

Identical twins have been used to control for “ability” in efforts to obtain unbiased estimates of the earnings impact of schooling and of biases in estimates that do not control for earnings endowments. This study (1) presents new estimates of schooling returns and of “ability” bias using a new twins sample, (2) develops and applies a test of the significance of that bias, and (3) demonstrates that there may be “ability” bias even if the genetically-endowed component of ability does not affect schooling decisions directly if this component of ability is correlated with other family characteristics such as income that do affect schooling. It is thus not possible to identify the separate contributions of family constraints and individual ability to “ability” bias. The basic empirical result is that, net of measurement error, upward “ability” bias is statistically significant in OLS estimates, causing an overestimate of the schooling impact of 12%. Individual Heterogeneity in the Returns to Schooling: Instrumental Variables Quantile Regression Using Twins Data

Considerable effort has been exercised in estimating mean returns to education while carefully considering biases arising from unmeasured ability and measurement error. Recent work has investigated whether there are variations from the “mean” return to education across the population with mixed results. We use an instrumental variables estimator for quantile regression on a sample of twins to e...

the co - twin methodology and returns to schooling - testing a critical assumption örjan sandewall david cesarini magnus johannesson

Twins-based estimates of the return to schooling feature prominently in the labor literature. Their validity hinges critically on the assumption that within-pair variation in schooling is explained by factors which are unrelated to wage earning ability. This paper develops a framework for testing this assumption, and …nds, using a unique dataset of monozygotic twins, strong evidence against it....

Estimating returns to education using different natural experiment techniques

How much do returns to education differ across different natural experiment methods? To test this, we estimate the rate of return to schooling in Australia using two different instruments for schooling: month of birth and changes in compulsory schooling laws. With annual pre-tax income as our measure of income, we find that the naı̈ve ordinary least squares (OLS) returns to an additional year of...

Ability and Rates of Return to Schooling - making use of the Swedish Enlistment Battery Test

The main objective of this paper is to estimate and compare the return to investments in education for men belonging to different parts of the ability distribution. Our ability measure is the achievement test score from the Swedish Military Enlistment Battery. By exploring the measurement error in the test score, i.e. the deviation from the true latent ability level of the individual, we try to...
